Tom Cannon ‘highly likely’ to leave Everton on loan, Stoke and Preston in talks – Alan Myers

Tom Cannon is “highly likely” to leave Everton on loan this summer with Stoke City and Preston North End interested, according to Alan Myers.

Writing on his personal Twitter account (2 August) the Sky Sports reporter has shared that the two Championship clubs are battling it out to sign the 20-year-old striker.

And after the arrivals of Arnaut Danjuma and the imminent signing of Youssef Chermiti from Sporting CP, Cannon is now set to head back out temporarily to the second flight to get regular game time.

“Both Stoke City and Preston NE battling to secure a loan deal for Tom Cannon, the 20 year old is highly likely to spend another season on loan in the Championship,” he wrote.

Smart decision

If Everton are going to use Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Danjuma and Chermiti as their attacking options this season then letting Cannon go on loan makes a lot of sense.

He really impressed while at Preston in the second half of last season and playing regularly will only see him continue to develop and potentially become an option for the first-team next season.

There could be question marks about why the club are signing Chermiti instead of just giving Cannon an opportunity and those are fair, but the opportunity to be first-choice and play regularly is no doubt more appealing for every party.

Preston seems like the most likely destination considering his time there last season but either potential club would be good for him and more importantly good for Everton.

It will be fun to watch his development and growth throughout the season and hopefully we won’t need to recall him in January because we have a chronic lack of goals ourselves.

In other Everton news, a Premier League striker is wanted as a direct replacement this outgoing star.
