Journalist shares verdict on why Sean Dyche didn’t sign Ross Barkley for Everton

Sean Dyche decided not to sign midfielder Ross Barkley for Everton because he isn’t the sort of player he wants in his team, according to Paul Brown.

Speaking to GiveMeSport on 10 August, the former Daily Star journalist said the 29-year-old would’ve had a “rough ride” if he made the move back to Goodison Park.

The midfielder joined Premier League newcomers Luton Town on a free transfer on 9 August after leaving Ligue 1 side Nice this summer.

“If he came back and had a bad game (at Everton), I think the fans would be right on his back,” said Brown. “He would have had a pretty rough ride from them.

“But the problem was that I just don’t think Sean Dyche wanted Ross Barkley. I don’t think he’s the sort of player that Sean Dyche wants in his team and, for that reason, I never could really see this one happening.”

Right decision

It was probably the right decision by Dyche to not take up the opportunity to bring Barkley back to Everton this summer after he eventually made the move to the Hatters.

Since leaving the Toffees for Chelsea in 2018, his career has gone backwards and he doesn’t seem to be showing any signs that he could get back to his best any time soon.

His decision to make the move away from Goodison Park wasn’t taken too well by the majority of the fans either, so it’s likely it would’ve been an unpopular decision if the club had chosen to sign him.

It’s a shame his career has panned out the way it has after he showed so much promise during his early days in a Blues shirt as he also earned 33 caps for England.

Perhaps he may be able to rediscover his previous form at Luton as they will probably look to build around him, but he never would’ve really fit in with what Dyche is trying to do with the Toffees ahead of the start of the new season.

In other Everton news, concerns have been expressed about the Toffees’ new stadium.
