Amadou Onana sends supportive message to Neal Maupay as Everton news emerges

Amadou Onana has sent a message of support to Neal Maupay after the Everton forward was abused following the defeat to Fulham on Saturday (12 August).

The Frenchman took to Instagram to highlight the abhorrent message he received and the club released a statement on Sunday morning (13 August) to condemn “all forms of personal abuse directed towards our players and their families or any club staff on social media”.

The 26-year-old has received a lot of support from his teammates since posting the message, with midfielder Onana saying on Instagram “Together we stand my brother, we all stand with you” and posting a photo of the forward.

It’s good to see Everton and a number of Maupay’s teammates have come out in support of him after he received the sickening abuse on social media.

While fans are entitled to vent their frustrations, there’s a clear line that should not be crossed and personal abuse is absolutely unacceptable when it’s just because a player hasn’t had the best game.

The forward missed a number of good opportunities to score in the defeat to Fulham, but we’re all human and sending messages about a player’s close family member is shameful.

The support given to the Frenchman shows that the team are united as one and perhaps this incident can help bring them together, with the fans also likely to rally around him ahead of the next match.

Maupay was clearly already lacking in confidence before the incident, so it will be important that everyone associated with the club come together now as they look to bounce back against Aston Villa next week.
