Sky Sports pundit outraged by ‘disgusting’ Everton development as official update shared

Sky Sports pundit Jermaine Beckford is appalled by the “disgusting” abuse aimed at Neal Maupay after Everton lost 1-0 to Fulham at Goodison Park on Sunday.

Maupay, 26, missed a number of chances as the Blues suffered an opening-day defeat in front of their own fans on Merseyside and after the game, the Frenchman took to Instagram to highlight some of the personal abuse he’d received.

Everton highlighted this on their official Twitter account in the early hours of Sunday morning (13 August), sending out a statement in which they say they condemn “all forms of personal abuse directed towards our players and their families or any Club staff on social media”.

Everton also shared an image of Maupay’s Instagram story after the striker showed a horrific message about his mother, adding: “This is what I get for not scoring. No one should ever deal with this.”

Former Everton and Leeds striker Beckford, 39, was outraged by the abuse, calling it “disgusting behaviour” on his personal Twitter account.

Rotten

It doesn’t matter which team you support, going to this unfathomable level of abuse is atrocious and doesn’t belong in any walk of life.

Maupay didn’t score a goal in a football match – yet received a message as nasty as that.

People forget that this is just a sport. If it affects your life so much that a 26-year-old bloke from France didn’t kick a leather ball of air into a net on Saturday then you need to see a professional.

We’re always told that football is a matter of life and death and maybe that level of hyperbole has rung too true with a bunch of people who are too idiotic to realise there are more important things to worry about.

Regardless of whether you think Maupay is a good or bad footballer and whether or not he’s the right man to lead Eveton’s attack, he doesn’t deserve anywhere near the abuse that was sent to him after the defeat against Fulham.

Do you think he’s really gone home after the game and was happy with how things went? Of course he wasn’t.

Grow up.
