Best and worst of Jordan Pickford on show in Everton 4-0 loss v Aston Villa

Everton continued their miserable start to the new Premier League season with a 4-0 loss to Aston Villa on Sunday (20 August).

It’s now five goals conceded from the opening two matches for number one Jordan Pickford and Everton following their opening day 1-0 loss to Fulham.

The Toffees goalkeeper, however, cannot be blamed for the majority of those goals, with his defenders not putting up much of a fight in front of him.

But the England international was at fault for Villa’s second goal of the afternoon at Villa Park, with the goalkeeper throwing himself at Ollie Watkins in a wreckless manner to concede a penalty in the 24th minute.

Brazil ace Douglas Luiz confidently slotted the spot-kick home, leaving Pickford wondering why on earth he made such a silly challenge in the first place. The attempted tackle has now landed the Everton goalkeeper a place in the history books for all the wrong reasons.

“Since making his Premier League debut for Everton in 2017-18, no goalkeeper has given away more penalties in the competition than Jordan Pickford (five – level with Ben Foster),” according to Opta Joe.

Adding to his issues in those moments against Villa was the fact that his delay tactics led to a yellow card for the shot-stopper.

But the goalkeeper also proved his worth to the Toffees on a handful of occasions, not least just nine minutes later when he produced a stunning save to keep out a volley from Moussa Diaby.

The Toffees ace was on hand to keep the scoreline somewhat presentable, although the majority of Everton fans definitely won’t view it that way.
