Pundit blasts Everton live on talkSPORT in ‘really wretched’ verdict after loss v Aston Villa
Everton were “really wretched” in their Premier League clash against Aston Villa on Sunday (20 August), according to Martin O’Neill.
The Merseyside outfit lost 4-0 to Unai Emery’s men at Villa Park, their second defeat in as many games after their opening day 1-0 loss to Fulham.
And O’Neill believes Sean Dyche’s men are in for a difficult season, with a “spark” needed to help turn things around.

Speaking live on talkSPORT, host Jim White said of Dyche: “He absolutely tells it as it is. ‘We were this, we were that, we were not good enough.’”
O’Neill replied: “Well it was difficult to say anything else other than that because they were really wretched, really wretched, I have to say. I was expecting more from Everton.
“In their opening game against Fulham, they created a number of chances. Calvert-Lewin starts the game and he’s just been afflicted with injury, poor lad.
“But at the end of it all, they need something, they need a spark from somewhere. I don’t know where it’s going to come from. But it looks a long, long hard season in front of them again.”

Miserable start
After two successive Premier League relegation battles, there was perhaps some optimism around Goodison Park that things could be different this time around.
New signings such as Ashley Young and Arnaut Danjuma have arrived, while Dyche had been working his players very hard in pre-season.
But the realists have proved right once again, with the Toffees looking completely bereft of confidence and indeed talent after just two matches.
The two defeats have left the Merseyside club sitting rock bottom of the table, with more difficult fixtures on the horizon.
Two attackers in the form of Jack Harrison and Youssef Chermiti are, however, waiting in the wings and should be raring to go for the Toffees.
Getting them on the pitch as soon as possible should be a priority for the Toffees, as should bringing in more new faces before the transfer window closes, as it’s clear that the current group need plenty of help.
