Manchester United transfer news as Everton make loan bid for Harry Maguire

Manchester United have turned down an offer from Everton to take Harry Maguire on loan for the season, while West Ham are keeping an eye on developments, according to Alan Nixon.

The newspaper journalist shared via his Patreon that Everton had offered to pay £50,000 per week of Maguire’s wage bill, which is thought to be closer to four times that amount, causing issues for any club that wants to sign him.

West Ham are expected to try their luck at a higher figure for the England international defender, after having a previous attempt to sign him fall through due to his wage demands.

A bold attempt

Everton’s attempt at luring Maguire to Goodison Park was certainly a bold one, as it never looked likely for United to pay such a high percentage of his wages. The salary he is on is the main reason behind United wanting to move him on, but there are simply no clubs who can afford that on top of his transfer fee.

Maguire would slot straight into Everton’s defence, likely alongside stalwart James Tarkowksi who Sean Dyche loves after working with him at both Burnley and Everton, and the Manchester United defender would bring plenty of experience to the role.

He would be a perfect player for Dyche. An experienced England international, and a homegrown player, who has leadership experience from captaining Manchester United, although he was recently stripped of that captaincy in favour of Bruno Fernandes.

There is no doubt Maguire would improve Everton’s side, despite the very critical public discourse around him. Gareth Southgate’s continued confidence in his ability should show how highly regarded he is, and he would fit Dyche’s system like a glove.
