Transfer twist as update emerges on Everton hunt for Borussia Monchengladbach defender Nico Elvedi
Everton are not close to signing Borussia Monchengladbach defender Nico Elvedi despite reports, according to Dominik Schneider.
Writing on his personal Twitter account (30 August), the Football Transfer Germany journalist reports that talk of a move for the defender to Goodison Park being imminent are wide of the mark.
There are talks ongoing with interested clubs about a potential transfer, but the player staying at the Bundesliga side hasn’t been ruled out and a move away currently is not imminent.
“I understand that Everton and Nico Elvedi is currently not hot,” he wrote.
“There are talks with some clubs that show interest, but a stay at Borussia Monchengladbach is also possible.
“As of now a transfer is not imminent.”
Makes sense
Elvedi is a talented central defender with good experience who looked decent at the World Cup in Qatar last year, but a transfer to Everton at this point would be odd.
James Tarkowski is currently the undisputed number one option at center-half under Sean Dyche, and currently the team have Michael Keane and Jarrad Branthwaite as competition.

The team is certainly light on numbers in that area of the pitch right now, but Elvedi would want to come in and immediately be a starter and it’s unclear if he would be the right fit immediately.
A fee is unlikely to be a problem with Gladbach not looking to lose him on a free transfer, but there are likely to be other targets way above him in the pecking order and with time running out Everton don’t have time to hang about at this point.
It’s one to keep an eye on, but it would be a real shock to see this come to fruition at this stage of the window.
In other Everton news, offer on the table for this Premier League defender but he will need convincing to move to Goodison Park.
