Everton to land cash windfall with transfer agreed as Niels Nkounkou heads for medical

Everton are now going to receive a late-window cash boost from their sell-on clause in Niels Nkounkou’s deal, which could prove key on the final day of the window.

The young French wing-back only made his departure from Goodison Park permanent for €2.5million [£2.13m] at the end of last season after half a campaign on loan in Ligue 2 with Saint-Etienne.

Foot Mercato reported on 22 August that the Toffees were due 30% of the profit from a subsequent transfer as part of that deal, with Eintratcht Frankfurt attempting to take the 22-year-old to the Bundesliga already this summer.

That is now set to go ahead after RMC Sport’s Fabrice Hawkins reported on the penultimate day of the transfer window Thursday (31 August) that the two sides had reached an agreement and Nkounkou was headed to Germany for his medical.

In his update on the outlet’s website Hawkins added that the left-sided player had a contract with the French side until 2026, suggesting his fee should be substantial.

The earlier Foot Mercato report stated that Saint-Etienne had turned down bids of €6m [£5.13] and a higher amount as they wanted €10m [£8.55m] to let Nkounkou leave so soon.

While it is not clear whether Frankfurt have met the full asking price it seems likely that they will have at least had to get somewhere close to that.

That would mean that Everton are due a cash boost of somewhere around £2m, which is hardly groundbreaking for a Premier League side, but given the financial pressures the club have been operating under this summer could go a long way towards a loan or two before the 11pm deadline on Friday (1 September).

Sean Dyche is expected to still be targeting cheap arrivals on free transfers of temporary moves after landing his headline arrival in £25m striker Beto, so a seven-figure windfall from a player who never played a game under him could be very useful on transfer deadline day.

In other Everton news, a Manchester City international has emerged as a potential target before the window shuts and he could be allowed to leave.
