Everton grant permission for Tom Cannon medical at Leicester City as multi-million agreement reached

Everton have granted permission for Tom Cannon to undergo a medical at Leicester City, according to The Athletic.

The news outlet reported on 1 September that the Toffees have agreed a £7.5million deal to sell the 20-year-old forward to the Championship club.

It said the Blues academy product has attracted interest from a number of second-tier this summer, but the Foxes now appear to have won the race for his signature.

Doesn’t make sense

It looks as though it’s only going to be a matter of time before Cannon completes his move to Leicester after the clubs have agreed a fee for him.

While it is a decent chunk of change for Everton to receive, it doesn’t make much sense to allow one of their brightest young talents to leave the club at a time when they’ve been trying to bring in younger players.

The club spent £15million on bringing in 19-year-old Youssef Chermiti from Sporting Lisbon as they wanted to add a young forward that they can nurture to their squad, but perhaps they already had that player in Cannon.

It had looked like he was going to head out on loan again earlier this summer, with Preston North End keen to take him back after he scored eight goals in 20 games during the second half of last season for them.

But his future now appears to lie away from Goodison Park on a permanent basis and only time will tell whether or not that will prove to be the right decision.

In other Everton news, Don Hutchison was impressed by a player’s “brilliant” performance against Doncaster.
