Alarm bells ring at ‘miracle’ Adnan Januzaj transfer to Everton hopes for January
Everton will only have themselves to blame if reports are accurate regarding a move to sign Adnan Januzaj in January, with Sevilla apparently desperate to get rid of him.
Fijaches.net reported on 22 September that the Toffees had been in contact with the winger’s representatives, with a Goodison switch in January something the 27-year-old would “welcome”.
The former Manchester United youngster spent the second half of last season on loan in Turkey with Instanbul Basaksehir and hasn’t played a single minute yet back in Spain this term.
That is the kind of dynamic that will be all too familiar to Everton fans who have seen the club struggle to move on players who appear to have no future prospects at Goodison Park, with the likes of Jean-Philippe Gbamin only released this summer after eight appearances and two loan spells in four years, and a move away for Andre Gomes apparently collapse on deadline day.
Vamos Mi Sevilla (25 September) reacted to the prospect of Sevilla sporting director Victor Orta shifting the Belgian to Merseyside with glee, hoping: “Therefore, it could be a real miracle if the rumours that English Premier League club Everton would be interested in the Sevilla winger are true.”
Januzaj, as with Gbamin and Gomes among others, are perfectly good players in their own right but, the morale-boosting win at Brentford at the weekend aside, Everton is not an easy place for players to rehabilitate themselves currently.
Dele Alli is a world-beater on his day but the former Tottenham star has found that out himself over the past 18 months.
Sean Dyche could do with another wide man having lost Alex Iwobi to Fulham on deadline day and Demarai Gray Al-Ettifaq even later this year, cancelling out the loan moves for Jack Harrison and Arnaut Danjuma, but adding Januzaj would fit the mould of the kind of deal that used to happen far too often during the Farhad Moshiri era.
For one reason or another Everton have spent money to bring players in on wages their production didn’t justify and have found themselves lumbered with a squad draining cash without the required return on the pitch.
Since he was one of the hottest prospects in the Premier League at Old Trafford Janujaz has had some decent years at Real Sociedad, but with just six appearances in a year at Sevilla he looks to have lost his way and surely needs to go somewhere with far more stability than the Toffees can offer, while Dyche needs to sign players he is sure can make an impact.
