Ben Foster nails Everton for relegation as Sean Dyche change mooted

Everton will face Premier League relegation if they attempt to change their style of play, according to Ben Foster.

Speaking on The Ben Foster Podcast (3 October), the former Premier League goalkeeper questioned if the Toffees needed relegation to improve recruitment and rebuild the side amid their continued struggles for form.

Foster nailed Everton for relegation if they divert from Sean Dyche’s current style of play, which has left them 16th in the league and one point outside the drop zone.

Foster said: “Do they need to get relegated? Do they need to spend a season in the Championship where they can recruit these players who know how to play football?

“Or do they try and do it step by step? That’s the thing, if they try and change their style of football now, they’ll get relegated, guaranteed.”

Foster does not back Everton’s chances this season, but Dyche’s pragmatic approach to the game has left the Toffees wanting at times. Chances are being created, but they are not being converted, while poor goals are being conceded from set pieces.

The signs are there that the new recruits, namely Beto, can kick into gear and start helping the sides to more points, but early performances have not been reassuring. The squad at Dyche’s disposal is certainly one of the three worst in the division, so sticking to his brand of football will be key in keeping the Toffees up.

The club can’t afford relegation this season. The Daily Mail reported (3 October) that three previously relegated sides, Leeds, Leicester City and Burnley, have sent a letter to 777 Partners reaffirming their desire to sue the club if they are found guilty of breaking Premier League spending rules.

This, coupled with their upcoming Bramley-Moore Dock stadium and their significant debt, the Toffees need Premier League status and all the revenue that follows.

Relegation speculation is never good this early in the season, but many Toffees fans would have expected this before the campaign kicked off.

In other Everton news, Micah Richards has named the manager “perfect” Toffees manager amid their Premier League worries.
