Everton takeover twist as 777 Partners receive £300m legal threat
Burnley, Leeds United and Leicester City have written a joint letter to 777 Partners, threatening to sue for £300million if Everton are found guilty of breaking Premier League spending rules, according to the Daily Mail.
The newspaper shared via their website on 3 October that the proposed takeover by 777 Partners has suffered another potential setback, with a decision on the rule-breaking allegations set to be made later this month.
The Daily Mail report goes on to claim the three clubs involved are unhappy that the charges weren’t dealt with last season, believing the delay may have helped Everton to survive relegation by avoiding a points deduction.
The problems keep stacking up
It is also reported that the letter was initially addressed to the Premier League, who have acknowledged the legal claim and passed it on to Everton’s prospective new owners. This means the League are informed and aware of the ongoing situation and could influence the outcome of the investigation.
It was shared last season that five clubs, the three named here as well as Nottingham Forest and Southampton, had claimed they would be due compensation if Everton are found guilty, and those claims have now been escalated.
This comes as yet another blow to 777 ahead of their prospective takeover that has been surrounded by controversy, differing claims and worry. Everton fans will now have one more issue to worry about.
A £300million legal claim could be enough to put a spanner in the works of the takeover that would already involve 777 paying off debts racked up by the club and will test the resolve of the group who now appear to have inserted themselves into the middle of ongoing controversy.
