BBC Sport journalist shares ‘catastrophic’ Everton relegation verdict as ‘very serious problem’ claim made

It would be a “catastrophic setback” if Everton were relegated from the Premier League, according to BBC Sport’s chief football writer Phil McNulty.

The journalist was discussing the issue of a potential points deduction for the Toffees ahead of their impending Premier League hearing.

The Merseyside outfit have been referred to an independent commission by the league for alleged breaches of financial regulations, with the hearing set for 25 October, as per BBC Sport.

“One thing is unavoidable, though, and that is that it would be a catastrophic setback, both in the financial and footballing context, should Everton be relegated with a new stadium to move into at Bramley Moore Dock and a points deduction would present a very serious problem,” McNulty wrote for BBC Sport.

Disaster

Everton have come close to being relegated from the Premier League in the last two seasons, surviving by the skin of their teeth in particular last time out.

The Toffees managed to defeat Bournemouth 1-0 at Goodison Park on the final day of the campaign to secure their safety, with Abdoulaye Doucoure the hero. Leeds United, Southampton and Leicester City went down instead, much to the relief of all connected with Everton.

But things haven’t quite gone to plan in the new campaign, with the Toffees currently sitting in 16th place after winning just two of their first eight games.

Sean Dyche’s men have picked up just seven points so far, with a points deduction certain to relegate the club this season, even with the struggles of Burnley, Bournemouth, Luton Town and Sheffield United.

Fans will be nervously awaiting the results of the hearing, but they might just take some comfort from the fact that the club have strenuously denied the allegations.

In other Everton news, the Toffees takeover could be over before it begins as an “explosive” 777 Partners update emerges.
