Everton boss Sean Dyche given welcome boost as needless decision avoided ahead of Merseyside derby
Everton manager Sean Dyche received some welcome news on Friday evening (13 October) as Jordan Pickford did not start for England against Australia.
Pickford was named among the substitutes for the friendly international at Wembley, with Sam Johnstone instead getting the nod between the sticks.
It is a decision that makes total sense from Gareth Southgate’s perspective, as the contest is effectively meaningless and there is a Euro 2024 qualifier against Italy to come next week.
Everton keeper Pickford is certain to start against the Azzurri in a repeat of the Euro 2020 final, but at least it is just that one game he must come through unscathed ahead of the Merseyside derby.
Dyche will want all of his international players back fit and firing for that massive contest at Anfield on 21 October.
Pickford is vital to Everton’s chances of picking up a positive result on enemy territory, so Dyche will welcome the fact he is in line for a breather against Australia.
The 29-year-old has started all eight Premier League game for the Toffees this season and remains the first name on the team sheet.
With an average of 2.25 saves made per 90 minutes this season [FBref], Pickford remains a key presence for Everton.
Let’s just hope he avoids any sort of injury against Italy on Tuesday (17 October) and returns to Finch Farm in peak shape.
