Brian Sorensen full of praise for Everton Women after victory v Liverpool
Everton Women boss Brian Sorensen has praised his team heavily after they won their first game for the season in the Merseyside derby against Liverpool at Anfield.
Sorensen admitted they could have been better, and the game became scrappy towards the end, but he was proud of his team for earning a vital victory against their rivals.
Megan Finnigan scored what eventually proved to be the winner, as Everton Women shared on their Twitter account, to win their first three points of the season.
Speaking to Everton’s official website, Sorensen gushed: “We rode [the early] storm and we looked good until the last 15 minutes when it became very scrappy, but that’s the way it is. They’re going to go for it – full power. I think maybe we should’ve killed [the game] earlier.
“It was hectic at times but [we had] a good feeling in the game. We were looking good and looking sharp. We had good control, so I’m really happy and proud of the girls.
“With the injuries we have, and it always sits in you a little when you lose the first two games, but this league is ruthless and if we don’t score our chances, you will lose. That’s how it is in this league, but today was enough with one [goal] and we’re happy about that.
“It was a complete team performance. I’m not in doubt about the players; I know what they’re capable of. I know when you step into this iconic place, that they will do the job. They will be calm and I really felt we were in control for large parts of the game.”

A huge victory
The win at Anfield is a huge moment for Everton Women in a number of ways. First of all, a victory in the Merseyside derby is always a big result, whatever time in the season it may be.
But after the poor start to the season they had suffered, losing both of their opening two games despite performances still looking impressive, it was imperative that they made one of their good displays count by winning three points, and to do it at Anfield was even better.
Sorensen and his team will now be hoping to push on, with this result as a springboard and proof of what they can do when they are playing at the top of their game.
After a fifth-placed finish last season, they will be looking to break into the illustrious top four. A poor start to the season had raised questions, but now is the time to see what this Everton Women’s side can do.
