Chris Sutton predicts Everton vs Liverpool result for BBC Sport after ‘wretched’ Merseyside derby record
Chris Sutton has predicted the “pretty wretched” Everton record in the Merseyside derby will continue in the lunchtime kickoff at Anfield on Saturday (21 October).
The BBC Sport pundit went for a 2-0 home win in predictions column on the broadcaster’s website on 19 October, taking a goal off Sean Dyche’s side on the direction of his daughter, having been impressive with new Reds men.
The Toffees last won at their closest rivals in February 2021 and go into the latest meeting 12 places behind Liverpool in fourth, but Sutton doesn’t expect it to be a thrashing.

Sutton said: “Everton’s overall record against Liverpool is pretty wretched, with one win home or away since 2010, and I can’t see much changing this time.
“I don’t think the Reds will run away with it but I’ve been very impressed by Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister in their midfield, and they have got so many talented attackers. It just feels like they will be too strong for the Toffees.
“Liverpool have beaten Everton by two goals at Anfield in each of the past two seasons, so I am going to go with that same scoreline.
“I would have gone with a goal for Everton but my daughter is telling me 2-0 again, so I am going to listen to her.”

It goes without saying that a result in this one would be a turn-up on paper, based more on the current standings of both sides than anything.
It’s true that over the past decade or more the Everton record in this fixture is nothing to write home about, but the last win is hardly beyond recent memory and there have also been three draws this decade.
For once Dyche has his side coming off an uplifting win, and a similarly rare occurrence is that his squad is relatively injury-free.

So, in light of how dire things have been at times in the past couple of years there might be some quiet hope of springing an upset.
Putting up a major fight is the least the fans expect away to Jurgen Klopp’s side so attitude will be point number one for the manager to focus on.
Clearly, few will give Everton much of a chance in this one but if they can capitalise on the positivity that took them into the international break then there could be an opportunity.
In other Everton news, a current Goodison ace still doesn’t want to go into the details of his dramatic arrival at the club.
