Chris Sutton slams Ashley Young live on BBC for ‘stupid’ moment in Everton loss v Liverpool

Ashley Young made a “stupid” challenge as Everton lost to Liverpool, according to BBC Sport pundit Chris Sutton.

The Toffees defender was shown two yellow cards in the first half of the Merseyside Derby on Saturday (21 October).

The home side won the Premier League meeting 2-0 at Anfield, with attacker Mohamed Salah scoring both of his club’s goals.

“I don’t know what Ashley Young was thinking of, a stupid challenge,” Sutton said on The Monday Night Club on BBC 5 Live Sport (23 October).

Silly decision

Everton definitely needed their full contingent if they were to take anything from their fierce rivals at Anfield given how both clubs went into the game. The Reds were flying high in the Premier League table, with the Toffees struggling towards the bottom end.

But Sean Dyche’s men were given an almost impossible task when Young was shown his second yellow card in the 37th minute, having been shown his first 18 minutes into the match.

It was a silly decision to dive in on Liverpool attacker Luis Diaz just outside the Everton box, particularly when he was already on a yellow.

Moreover, the veteran should definitely know better given his experience in the game, having played in the top flight for several years for the likes of Manchester United and Aston Villa.

He certainly let his teammates and his manager down, although they did put up a fight for the rest of the match, only to come up short thanks to Salah’s double.
