Jaime Carragher pays tribute to Bill Kenwright as Everton chairman dies aged 78

Jaime Carragher has taken to social media to pay his respects to Bill Kenwright after the Everton chairman’s passing at 78.

Taking to X (24 October), the former Liverpool player mourned the “really sad news” but hailed Kenwright’s support of the Hillsborough memorial every year.

Kenwright was on the Everton board since 1989 and served for 19 years as chairman, with the club sharing that they were “in mourning” in their official statement.

Carragher wrote: “Really sad news this. A huge Evertonian who served & loved his club to bits. I’ll never forget his & Everton’s support every year around the Hillsborough memorial. RIP Bill.”

Touching

While Carragher’s allegiances are now solely with Liverpool, he has been very open with the fact that he was an Everton fan in his youth.

Old footage posted by Sky Sports Retro (7 July 2020) showed Carragher’s past admiration for Everton heroes like Graeme Sharp, but his tribute remains touching despite his obvious commitment to Liverpool.

Everton

Carragher noted Kenwright’s repeat respect to the Hillsborough memorial, with one notable speech in 2013 given by the chairman that left the crowds of Anfield in tears. His class was apparent and the outpour of tributes from fellow Premier League clubs, former players and pundits reflects the impact he had at the club.

He helped Everton to six qualifications for European competition during his spell and achieved 12 top-eight finishes in the top flight. As a lifelong Everton fan, Kenwright had the club’s best interest in mind and will very clearly be missed by all those involved with the club.

In other Everton news, Garth Crooks was left livid with matchday officials after a “cynical” moment in the Toffees’ loss against Liverpool.
