Graeme Souness blasts Everton after Frank Lampard flop after Rangers job interview live on talkSPORT
Graeme Souness has blasted Everton as a “basket case” and defended Frank Lampard for failing here after his interview for the Rangers job.
Lampard was one of the candidates for the job at Ibrox earlier this month with Souness part of the interview process, before Philippe Clement eventually got the nod from the board in Scotland.
But Souness admitted he would have hired Lampard and claimed that the Toffees haven’t improved at all since he left and was replaced by Sean Dyche in January while live on talkSPORT with Jim White and Simon Jordan (26 October, 11:27).

“There were two outstanding candidates; Frank and Philippe,” Souness said. “The final say wasn’t with me.
“For me, Frank had the edge because of this; Frank, I think, has still got a great deal to offer. Taking the Chelsea job when he did was always going to be very, very difficult. The Everton job is a basket case. And have they improved since Frank left? Not a bit.”
“So, I wouldn’t be too critical of Frank. The thing that encouraged me about Frank is that he wanted to do it. He doesn’t need the money. He wants to be a successful manager. And he fancied the Rangers job.”
Nonsense
Souness is a very knowledgeable man when it comes to football, especially in England, but when it comes to Everton he clearly doesn’t have a clue.
We’ll even ignore the fact that he is a Liverpool legend and has their best interests in mind when it comes to football on Merseyside, but to say that we haven’t improved since Lampard left is absurd to put it simply.

As a team there is now a clear structure to the way we play and while the results haven’t been the best this season, the performances have been far better and once the off-the-pitch issues are solved we should see an upswing in form and the direction the club is travelling in.
As for Lampard, there is a reason his stock is currently at an all-time low. It’s like Souness has forgotten that after leaving Everton he went back to Chelsea and managed one win in 19 games.
He may speak well and have been a fantastic player, but Lampard isn’t a good enough manager for the top level and Everton are far better off without him at the helm.
