Everton: Amadou Onana shares January transfer window plans

Amadou Onana has opened up on his plans for the January transfer window after admitting he got “used to losing almost every week” at Everton.

The Toffees star joined the club in a £33m deal under Frank Lampard and was a key member of the side as they narrowly avoided relegation, and has since become a key member of the midfield under Sean Dyche too.

While speaking to DH Net (3 November) in an interview, Onana admitted that he struggled last year as he “got used to losing almost every week” but revealed that he has no plans whatsoever to leave Goodison Park this winter.

“I grew a lot mentally last season,” he said.

“I always fought for trophies or places of honor. The mindset is different, you have to get used to losing almost every weekend. It was hard. The pressure was enormous because there was the weight of the story weighing on our shoulders.

“I would have blamed myself all my life for a club like that to be in the Championship. We were reminded of it daily, so it didn’t come out of my head.”

“I’m still learning. Personally, and football-wise. We have to defend, run and suffer more this season. And I take that stuff.

“For the future, I don’t ask myself too many questions. Only my performance will take me where I want. I’m not thinking about leaving in January.”

Relief

The mood around the club in recent weeks on the pitch has been sensational with five wins in our last seven, which has helped to plaster over the fact that off the pitch there have been huge problems.

But with the January transfer window approaching there are question marks over how the club will approach it from bringing people in and also allowing people to leave.

There is also the fact that rival clubs know all about our financial issues and that means they could try to take advantage by trying to sign key players during the window.

Onana would no doubt be one of those players targeted such is his age, quality, and ceiling, and one of those mega bids from a super-rich club would surely be tempting for the board to cash in and ease some problems.

However the player is committed to staying at Everton and we will need our best players to ensure that there is no relegation battle again this time around, so it’s great to see we’re all on the same page.
