Everton: Pat Nevin gives Premier League relegation verdict live on BBC

Everton can still see the relegation zone “in the rear view mirror” but are now on the right track, according to BBC Sport pundit Pat Nevin.

The Toffees drew 1-1 with Brighton and Hove Albion at Goodison Park on Saturday (4 November) to move another point clear of danger.

However, it could easily have been all three points for Sean Dyche’s side had they not conceded an own goal late on in the contest.

Discussing the match on BBC Radio 5 Live [4 November, 17:02], Nevin said: “The game had almost a cup tie atmosphere about it.

“Everton fans know it is imperative for the team to get away from that bottom three, and had they got the win they would have been miles off it.

“Yes they can still see it in the rear view mirror, but that point in the end might still prove very important for them.”

Not to be

After earning a 1-0 win at West Ham last weekend and following that up with progression against Burnley in the EFL Cup, Everton had momentum on their side.

That only grew further when Vitaliy Mykolenko put them in front against Brighton in a game that had some contentious decisions at both ends.

However, with back-to-back Premier League wins for the first time in over a year right in front of them, Everton saw Kaoru Mitoma’s cross deflect off Young and over a despairing Jordan Pickford.

This can still be considered a hugely positive week for Everton, though, and they are now six points clear of the dropzone, albeit having played a game more than Luton Town in 18th.

Everton are not out of danger just yet, but there is now a growing feeling that the Toffees can start looking up the table rather than behind them.

With a trip to Crystal Palace to come next weekend, let’s just hope this momentum continues into the international break.
