Athletic journalist suggests ‘big clubs’ may target Everton star Dominic Calvert-Lewin this January

Nick Miller has suggested that a “big club” in the Premier League may move to sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin from Everton this January.

The Toffees striker has finally conquered the fitness issues that have plagued him in recent seasons and has impressed in Sean Dyche’s side, scoring three goals in his first nine Premier League appearances.

While he hasn’t been one of the most prolific forwards in England’s top flight, The Athletic journalist Miller has questioned whether some big clubs will move for the 26-year-old, should they be put off by Ivan Toney’s lack of football recently.

Writing for The Athletic (14 November) they said: “It will be interesting to see if anyone is put off moving for Toney in January and, if so, I wonder whether a big club that needs a forward might take a look at Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin.”

Would be a blow

Currently, this is nothing more than some early speculation ahead of the January transfer window, but you have to wonder whether or not teams at the top end of the Premier League will be considering a move for Calvert-Lewin when the window opens again.

The striker has proven throughout his Everton career that he is more than capable of being an incredibly effective forward in the Premier League and while he has struggled in recent seasons, he looks as though he has started to return to his impactful best.

Everton will be hoping that no bids land on Merseyside in January as they remain incredibly short of options to lead the line, with Beto struggling to find the net since arriving from Udinese in what has been a slow start to life in the Premier League.

But the current financial situation at Goodison Park could see the Toffees forced to accept an offer if it were to match their valuation of Calvert-Lewin. Should that bid arrive at the beginning of 2024, Everton will have a huge decision to make.

The England international’s contract expires at the end of the 2024/25 season so a January sale of a summer move represents the final two options to receive a big fee for the forward. It’s safe to say it could be another tense transfer window for Everton supporters.
