Joe Anderson calls out Sky Sports over Everton protest footage during Manchester City v Liverpool
Former Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson has accused Sky Sports of being “scared” after not broadcasting footage of a plane carrying a protest message from Everton supporters.
Everton fans chartered the plane to fly over the Etihad Stadium during the second half of Manchester City’s Premier League showdown with Liverpool.
While numerous images and videos emerged of the banner, which read “Premier League = corrupt”, on social media, Sky Sports opted not to mention it at all.
Anderson posted on his personal Twitter account [25 November]: “Sky never showed this banner flying over the Man City v LFC game because they are scared of Premier League bullies, retweet this football fans everywhere, it’s the truth.”
Nicely done
The Man City and Liverpool match would have been watched by millions of people right across the globe, so it made sense to charter the plane for this game.
There was always a risk Sky Sports would try to hush it, in the same way they are planning to quieten Everton fans for Sunday’s (26 November) televised home clash with Manchester United [Liverpool Echo].
However, thanks to the power of social media, it could be argued that it actually worked better that Sky did not show the banner.
This is the first of a multi-pronged protest by Toffees fans across the weekend, with many already making their feelings known outside the Premier League’s HQ on Friday (24 November) [The Athletic].
As long as a line is not crossed, which it so far has not been, then these protests are the perfect way to let the world know our feelings towards the Premier League.
In other Everton news, Paul Merson says he will be “shocked” if a certain outcome happens in the Toffees’ clash with Man United.
