John Murray blown away on BBC Radio 5 Live by Everton fan protests v Manchester United

Commentator John Murray is unsure if he has ever heard jeers as loud as the ones prior to Sunday’s (26 November) meeting between Everton and Manchester United.

Everton fans booed during the pre-match anthem at Goodison Park as part of a protest aimed at the Premier League following last week’s 10-point deduction.

Murray, commentating on the game for BBC Radio 5 Live, was amazed by the noise generated by the home fans.

“Actions speak louder than words, all around us,” he said, as quoted by BBC Sport’s live blog [26 November, 16:30].

“It’s behind us, to our left, looking up, pink placards with the Premier League logo on them.

“A chorus of boos, the like of which I’m not sure I’ve ever heard a louder one.”

Keep it up

While the result may have been disappointing, with Everton succumbing to a 3-0 loss against Manchester United, the protests before and during the game were spot on.

Fans made their disdain towards Premier League officials quite clear in the build-up to the match in the streets around Goodison, while continuing those protests in front of the Sky Sports cameras.

It made for one of the best atmospheres in the stadium’s proud history, albeit lasting just three minutes as Alejandro Garnacho scored a staggering goal for the visitors.

Those listening on the radio, or indeed watching along on TV, would have also been impressed by the decibel levels inside Goodison.

It has been a successful weekend of protests, which also included a gathering outside the Premier League’s headquarters and a banner being flown above the Etihad Stadium.

All supporters can do for now is continue doing what they are doing ahead of the club lodging a formal appeal in the coming days or weeks.
