Peter Reid issues £1bn admission as he fumes over recent Everton development

Peter Reid will be in the directors’ box at Goodison Park as Everton take on Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday, 26 November.

The former Toffees midfielder has taken a shot at Manchester United for their owners putting the club into debt and not being sanctioned for it.

Chelsea and Manchester City too, are being investigated and may be found guilty of breaching FFP.

Via the Sunday Express (26 November, Page 7), Reid said: “I understand the idea behind Financial Fair Play.

“But if one club can be docked 10 points for having an owner who has put money into his club, while another club can build debts beyond £1billion without any punishment, then the system can’t be working, can it?

“Ten points is a punishment that doesn’t fit the crime.”

Spot on

The decision by the Premier League to deduct 10 points from Everton due to a minor financial breach has ignited a heated debate surrounding the league’s disciplinary consistency.

A striking comparison with Manchester City’s situation, entangled in a staggering 115 charges related to FFP, raises valid concerns about the fairness of the imposed penalties.

It’s baffling to witness the Toffees facing a severe punishment for a modest financial misstep, while Manchester City appear to navigate through more significant allegations with seemingly lighter or even no consequences.

This glaring inconsistency has spurred discussions and calls for a thorough reassessment of the league’s approach to enforcing financial regulations.

Critics argue that Everton’s case sets a worrisome precedent and emphasises the need for a more uniform and equitable system to maintain the league’s integrity.

Hopefully, on 26 November, the Toffees fans will show that they’re standing in solidarity against the Premier League with protests planned in the Manchester United clash.
