Kevin Thelwell plots Everton transfer strategy in ‘limited’ admission

Everton Director of Football Kevin Thelwell has laid out the club’s transfer plans and strategy, accepting that with the limited money available, they need to spend it on the right players.

Thelwell shared the way Everton want to build a squad with a mixture of experienced professionals like James Tarkowski and Abdoulaye Doucoure and young stars like Amadou Onana and Jarrad Branthwaite.

He revealed that bringing in experienced players who can help the club immediately is still a big part of their plans, but they also want resale value on every player they purchase.

Speaking to the VSI Sporting Directors’ Podcast, Thelwell shared: “Our reality is that there is limited resource available. When we’re selecting players, when we’re bringing in players, if we are going to spend any money we have to be spending it for the right reasons.

“They have to be able to help us right now of course. Going forward, if we are spending a large amount of money on a transfer fee, we want to have the ability to resell in the future.

“We still rely on and regard experienced players as being a big part of the plan: James Tarkowski is an example, Abdoulaye Docuoure is an example. But then supporting that with young players that have the opportunity to grow and develop with them as well as achieve.

“The Amadou Onanas, Jarrad Branthwaite this year, Jimmy Garner, Dwight McNeil etcetera. Understand we still need to get results, but maybe we can get results by building a team in a particular way.”

Plans are in place for the future

With a clear outline of their intentions in the transfer market, the types of players they want to sign, and the potential future implications of those signings, it looks as if Thelwell and Everton finally have a long-term plan in place for building the squad.

The support of Sean Dyche and the rest of the team behind the scenes at Everton will assist in building a squad that not only can get Everton immediate results but hopefully with the emergence of some top young players can help the club move forward.

One issue that could be taken with these plans is the suggestion that experienced players could be brought in immediately as short-term fixes but also have resale value. The two things simply don’t go together. Either it’s a transfer for now, or it’s one for the future.

However, it is important to have these plans in place to provide the club with a sense of direction and ambition heading into every transfer market as they try not to replicate the mistakes of the past.
