Everton: Michael Dawson blasts Dominic Calvert-Lewin after what he did in first half v Tottenham

Michael Dawson has blasted Dominic Calvert-Lewin after what he did in the first half of the Everton game against Tottenham on Saturday (23 December).

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday (03:08pm), the pundit said it had been a “sloppy” start to the match as Dwight McNeil dispossessed Oliver Skipp before playing in the 26-year-old forward, who failed to put the Toffees ahead.

He added that the England international would be “so disappointed” as he didn’t get his shot away quick enough, with Cristian Romero denying him with a well-timed challenge.

“The best opportunity of the game, it comes to Everton,” said Dawson. “Dominic Calvert-Lewin is going to be so disappointed he doesn’t get a shot away quicker.

“I talked about it being sloppy, it’s Oliver Skipp who gets the ball taken off him here from Dwight McNeil, he just runs at the Spurs defenders, gets into the Spurs half and he just plays a great pass into Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

“You think he’s going one-on-one with the keeper, he takes a touch into the box and Romero comes from nowhere and slides.

“Good job he got the tackle right, otherwise it could’ve been a penalty and he could’ve quite easily been off. But Calvert-Lewin just took too long to get his shot away on his left-hand side, great tackle but a big opportunity for Everton.”

Costly

It was an opportunity Calvert-Lewin really had to take as McNeil had previously done so well to win the ball back and set him through on goal.

The forward clearly didn’t fancy himself on his weak foot as he took his time before Romero managed to catch up with him and make an excellent challenge.

It’s surprising to see him not put the chance away as he is usually pretty clinical when he finds himself in those kinds of positions.

It looks like it’s going to prove costly for the Blues as Tottenham took the lead just a minute later through ex-Goodison Park favourite Richarlison.

Son Heung-min then registered a second for Spurs on 18 minutes to ensure it’s a long way back for Sean Dyche’s side if they want to come away from North London with anything.
