Jason Cundy disagrees with Sean Dyche comments on controversial Everton incident v Tottenham

Jason Cundy has disagreed with Sean Dyche after what he said about the disallowed Dominic Calvert-Lewin goal for Everton against Tottenham on Saturday (23 December).

Speaking on talkSPORT, the pundit said he thought it was a foul by midfielder Andre Gomes in the build-up after the Toffees boss admitted after the game that he thought it was “re-refereeing” when VAR recommended to Stuart Attwell to overturn his decision and award a foul.

Cundy added that he understands where Dyche was coming from, but that he would’ve wanted the foul to be given if it had been on one of his players, with the Blues falling to a 2-1 defeat against Spurs.

“It reminded me a little bit actually of the Will Hughes challenge on Endo a couple of weeks ago at Crystal Palace, where they were played in and they won a penalty and Van Dijk got booked,” said Cundy.

“It’s very similar, wins the ball from behind, doesn’t get any contact with the ball, takes the player. It’s not the worst foul in the world, it’s not a completely clear-cut foul from the referee’s point of view.

“But when you look at it and analyse it, it is a foul. I get what he’s saying, but the truth is, if it’s the other way around, he wants it.”

Not enough

There is no way that the officials can come back and say it was a “clear and obvious” error by Attwell as he had a great view of the incident and decided to play on.

There seemed to be very little contact by Gomes on Emerson Royal, with the Everton midfielder just showing more strength as he won the ball back.

But we’re at the point now where it’s pretty inevitable that the referee is going to overturn his decision once VAR asks him to go to the monitor.

Dyche is no doubt frustrated with the outcome as that would have made the scoreline 2-1 just a few minutes into the second half with plenty of time still to play.

But nothing is going to change as the officials are continuing to make errors and there are no signs that the situation is going to get better any time soon.
