Everton update as surgery on cards after Finch Farm development

Everton loanee Lewis Warrington has returned from his loan with Plymouth Argyle with an injury and surgery may now be on the cards, according to Chris Errington.

The Plymouth Live journalist reported on Wednesday (27 December) that the 21-year-old has returned to Merseyside after suffering a knee injury, with the Toffees set to determine whether or not the midfielder requires surgery.

Warrington has only featured four times for the Pilgrims this term and Argyle’s director of football Neil Dewsnip has suggested that the Everton loanee will be sidelined for “quite a while” but has not ruled Warrington returning to Home Park this season.

Dewsnip suggested that those discussions will take place when the nature of the injury is determined once Everton determine the severity of Warrington’s issue and decide whether or not he requires surgery.

Fingers crossed

Warrington’s loan switch to Plymouth probably hasn’t quite gone as either Everton or the midfielder would have hoped this season, with the 21-year-old proving to be little more than a bit part player at Home Park before this latest injury.

The Toffees loanee has made only two appearances in the Championship this term and only one of those has seen him named in the starting XI, where he was hooked after 45 minutes by Steven Schumacher as the Pilgrim’s lost 4-1 to Bristol City.

Everton

Everton’s hope would have been for Warrington to kick on after he impressed in League One with Fleetwood Town last season where he played a part in 38 games, but all in all, this loan switch has seemed like a backwards step which may have slowed down his development.

The opportunity to play under a new manager now that Schumacher has joined Stoke seemed like it could well have breathed new life into the 21-year-old’s loan, but almost immediately he has picked up what looks like it could be an incredibly serious injury.

Hopefully, it isn’t quite as bad as initially feared and Everton won’t need to send Warrington for surgery. Maybe he’ll be able to kick on at Plymouth in the second half of the campaign if he can get back to full fitness quickly.
