Paul Brown moots new Everton contract for Andre Gomes despite Goodison exit rumours

Paul Brown has mooted a new contract for Andre Gomes after the midfielder has returned to the Everton side over the past week.

Speaking to GiveMeSport on Monday (1 January), the former Daily Star journalist said there may be talk of extending the 30-year-old’s deal at Goodison Park if he puts in more performances like his display off the bench against Tottenham on 23 December.

But he doesn’t believe the Toffees would be too upset if the Portuguese midfielder, who has been linked with a move away from the club, were to leave in the summer if they can get a few decent months out of him this season.

“He’s going to get in minutes in some capacity I think for the rest of the season now and I don’t think that the club would be selling him in January,” said Brown.

“They can’t really afford to make the squad any weaker. I suppose if he puts in a few more performances like the one he did at Tottenham Hotspur, there may even be talk of trying to extend his time at Goodison Park.

“But I don’t think that the club would be too upset if they get another decent few months out of him and he still leaves in the summer. I think that’s probably the most you can expect out of the situation.”

See what happens

This is a situation where Everton are best to wait and see what happens with Gomes over the next few months due to his history of injuries.

Although he put in an excellent performance off the bench against Tottenham, where he scored his side’s only goal of the game, he has to continue to put those displays in consistently over the next few months if he wants to extend his stay on Merseyside.

The midfielder could prove to be a real asset if he can back to his best, having missed the first half of the season through injury.

Sean Dyche made it clear to the Portuguese over the summer that he wants him to be part of his squad this campaign, so he’ll be looking to back up why his manager put his faith in him.

There are spots up for grabs in the Toffees’ midfield this season as they look to pick up the results that will steer them away from the Premier League relegation zone again.
