English media wowed by ‘sublime’ Everton loanee Neal Maupay after what he did v Wolves

Everton loanee Neal Maupay played the full 90 minutes as Brentford played out a 1-1 draw with Wolves in the FA Cup third round on Friday night.

Wolves earned an FA Cup third-round replay with Premier League rivals Brentford despite having Joao Gomes sent off after just nine minutes at the Gtech Community Stadium (5 January).

Toffees loanee Maupay opened the scoring after 41 minutes with a well-taken strike from a corner but the Bees were pegged back by a Tommy Doyle equaliser in the second half.

Maupay bagged his fourth goal in Brentford colours since his loan move and UK media outlet London World shared their reaction (5 January) to his display against Wolves, handing him a 6/10 rating:

“Absolutely sublime finish for his goal but far too often anonymous. Not the figurehead Brentford needed when dominating possession.”

Same problems

Maupay has never been far from criticism since his move to Everton in August 2022 with the striker often going into hiding in games which ultimately led to Dyche binning him on loan back to his old club in West London.

The Frenchman has done reasonably well at the Bees since then, bagging three goals and three assists in 13 games in all competitions but his same problems at Everton still persist for Thomas Frank’s men.

Everton

Maupay certainly has a knack for the spectacular at times as his goal showed against Wolves but when things aren’t going for him, he’s either nowhere to be seen all game or gets himself into a needless controversies that disrupts his image.

It’s no wonder why Everton got rid of him last summer and it’s even more unlikely that he plays again in an Everton shirt at Goodison Park. His goal against Wolves was indeed sublime but his all-round game leaves so much to be desired.

It’s uncertain to predict what his future beyond this season holds but Everton will be hoping to get a fair few million pounds for his services next summer. For that to happen, he will need more consistent goals and sublime moments.
