Ajax could be tempted to sell Steven Bergwijn in January as Everton want to sign him

Ajax will be tempted to sell Steven Bergwijn in the January transfer window, with Everton among the Premier League clubs interested in his signature, according to HITC.

The football news outlet reported on 9 January that, while Ajax would prefer to keep the Dutchman beyond the January window, their financial concerns may push them into a sale.

Having paid £26million to sign him from Tottenham, Ajax will reportedly demand close to that fee if they are to sell him in the coming weeks, with six English clubs named as interested parties.

A new name on the list

Bergwijn’s availability may have piqued Everton’s interest given their desire for added depth in this transfer window, but the £26million valuation appears somewhat out of their reach.

Having been linked to West Ham throughout the window so far, Everton are now named alongside Crystal Palace, Brentford, Fulham and Wolves as interested clubs, with Premier League competition mounting amongst clubs desperate for attacking reinforcements.

This one, however, seems unlikely to be accurate as far as the Merseyside club are concerned. Bergwijn can play as a striker or a winger, but his profile does not fit Dyche’s system, and as we have seen with his countryman Arnaut Danjuma this season, that means he is unlikely to play.

Dwight McNeil and Jack Harrison have been the first-choice wide-men at Goodison Park so far this season due to their crossing ability and hard-working nature as touchline wingers, whereas Bergwijn is more of an attacking outlet.

While their interest may be genuine, he doesn’t seem like the right fit for this team at this moment, and it is more likely to be his agent attempting to drum up interest.
