Everton transfer news: Tottenham could still sign Ben Godfrey after £25m Radu Dragusin deal

Tottenham are still interested in signing Everton outcast Ben Godfrey in January despite sealing a £25m deal for Radu Dragusin, according to Graeme Bailey.

Speaking to TheSpurs.news (12 January), journalist Bailey reports that Toffees defender Godfrey remains a target in north London despite the club already sealing a deal for a new central defener this month.

But after allowing Eric Dier to join Bayern Munich Spurs are still in the market for defensive reinforcements and if Godfrey becomes available for the right price then they could pull the trigger.

“The defence is an interesting one because obviously Dier is going and they’ve brought in Dragusin,” he said. “It still wouldn’t surprise me if we saw another centre-half come in.

“We know the players they like, Lloyd Kelly, Ben Godfrey, Tosin [Adarabioyo] – that sort of player who can also play at full-back.

“Kelly won’t be an easy one to get this January so I think Spurs are happy with where they are but if a deal comes around, like if Godfrey becomes available at the right price, they may pull the trigger and do it.”

No surprise

Everton have had some really solid defensive performances this season and Godfrey hasn’t been involved in any of them really.

Spurs on the other hand have had real problems defensively this season with injuries and suspensions and Ange Postecoglou has often been forced to use Emerson Royal and Ben Davies in the middle.

So if Godfrey who can play in the middle, at full-back or even in midfield if necessary this would be a fine option for Spurs but only if the financial side of things is right.

For Everton it could be a good deal to do because he isn’t involved and it would be a good way to alleviate some of the financial pressure at the club, but Dyche would surely want a replacement and that could be an issue.

It seems more likely to be a deal that takes place later in the window, but it’s certainly one to keep an eye on if Spurs are still in the market.

In other Everton news, one club are pressuring their player to join the Toffees on loan with a decision expected next week.
