Two key Everton arguments detailed to avoid fresh points deduction after new PSR charge

Everton have two key arguments they will make against the latest charge brought against the club for an alleged breach of Profit and Sustainability rules, iNews has reported.

The Toffees along with Nottingham Forest were charged on Monday after the Premier League hit them with a charge for flouting its financial rules.

Everton were punished with a 10-point deduction earlier this season in relation to a separate charge, a ruling they have appealed against and are waiting to hear if their punishment will be reduced or altered.

Daily Mail reported Mike Keegan posted on X on Monday (15 January) to say Everton will also appeal this latest decision, and iNews has detailed what their main lines of defence will be.

“One of Everton’s most compelling arguments is around the costs of the new Bramley-Moore Dock stadium and how that impacted expenditure. The club lost a £200m naming rights pre-agreement with USM after Alisher Usmanov, the company’s owner, was sanctioned for links to Russia’s war in Ukraine,” the report, posted online (15 January), read.

“Two key arguments are expected to be the disproportionate scale of the punishment and the interpretation of mitigating circumstances in the original case.

“There was also disagreement over writing off interest on loans for the club’s new stadium build.”

Shambles

This really is becoming quite ridiculous now, the Premier League’s rules are just completely unworkable and big changes are needed immediately.

No one is denying that club’s should be punished for breaking rules but the problem is more the rules themselves and the implementation of them.

Everton could essentially be punished twice for a large majority of the same accounting periods. It just doesn’t feel right or fair in any way shape or form.

It completely detracts away from what’s happening on the pitch, which is where everyone wants the focus to be. Plus we are seemingly no nearer as it stands to finding out how Everton’s first appeal is going to go.

Right now things are a complete mess and the Premier League needs to get a grip on its own rules moving forward otherwise we are going to end up in a complete mess across the whole competition.
