Everton: Journalist moots Jarrad Branthwaite sale to avoid third Premier League spending breach at Goodison Park
Everton will probably have to sell defender Jarrad Branthwaite in the summer transfer window, according to Alex Crook.
Speaking on talkSPORT on Monday (15 January, 04:28pm), the journalist said the sale of the 21-year-old may be necessary to help balance the books again and avoid another spending breach.
It comes after the Toffees and Nottingham Forest have been referred to an independent commission for alleged breaches of profit and sustainability rules in their accounts for 2022-23, with the Merseysiders already being hit with a 10-point deduction in November last year.

“What I would say is, we’re talking an awful lot about this sort of stuff more than we’re talking about football,” said Crook. “The other element and it’s a fascinating one when it comes to Chelsea, for example, Conor Gallagher. If someone bids £45million to £50million, Chelsea will sell Conor Gallagher this window.
“Not because Mauricio Pochettino doesn’t think he’s good enough, he’s the captain. But because he’s a homegrown player and, therefore, that £45million to £50million goes down on the balance sheet as 100 per cent profit.
“We might see Emile Smith Rowe leave Arsenal for the same reason in this transfer window and Everton will probably have to sell Jarrad Branthwaite in the summer window to balance next season’s books.
“Is that really good for football fans, seeing homegrown players come through the academy and sold just to balance the books? I’m not sure it is. I’m not sure that’s what football is all about.”
Frustrating
It will be incredibly frustrating for Everton fans to hear they may be forced to sell one of their brightest talents in order to ensure they are not hit with any further rule breaches.
The club are still waiting to hear back whether or not they have been successful in their appeal over the first ruling that was handed out in November.
The news of another spending breach has been met with yet more uproar on Merseyside as many associated with the Toffees believe they are being harshly done by.

If the Blues can’t spend money to strengthen their squad and are forced to sell their young stars to balance the books, then how on earth are they supposed to progress forward?
It feels as though a rethink is needed within the Premier League as these issues are going to continue occurring if the league doesn’t start working with clubs to even up the playing field.
