‘More likely’ Everton punishment shared amid second points deduction threat from Premier League

Everton are more likely to face a fine rather than another points deduction after they were charged for a new breach of the Premier League’s financial rules, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper reported via their website on 15 January that, having already been docked ten points by the Premier League this season, they could face a different punishment as a result of the second charge.

However, it is reiterated that this will later be determined by the independent commission. Therefore, it would be difficult to predict exactly what the sanction given the Everton will be.

Everton would take a fine

Following the extensive protests against the Premier League after Everton were found guilty of breaching profit and sustainability rules and handed a ten-point deduction, the threat of those protests ramping up again is a very real possibility after a second charge.

If Everton were to receive a fine as a result of their second charge, it would be significantly easier for the club to take on the chin, as it would not have any direct effect on their fight against relegation and therefore the future of the club on and off the field.

However, if the club is given a strong fine rather than another points deduction, it would call into question the decision to hand a points deduction to begin with as both instances have seen a breach of the same rules.

It would simply add fuel to the fire in terms of the reaction to the initial points deduction, as the Premier League would prove that a fine was a possible sanction that could have been given as a consequence of the initial breach of the rules.
