Ben Godfrey sends one-word message to Andre Gomes after Everton win v Crystal Palace

Ben Godfrey labelled Andre Gomes as a “magician” after his heroics in helping Everton into the FA Cup fourth round.

The Portuguese midfielder scored a 42nd-minute free-kick as the Toffees defeated Crystal Palace 1-0 at Goodison Park in a third-round replay on Wednesday (17 January).

Posting after the game on Instagram, 30-year-old Gomes wrote: “Great team performance and another fantastic night at Goodison! Onto the next round. Up the Toffees!”

His message drew a one-word reply from versatile defender Godfrey, who merely wrote: “Magician.”

Great moment

There has not been a great deal to celebrate as an Everton fan of late, what with another charge for an alleged breach of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules and more uncertainty over the 777 takeover deal.

On the pitch things had stalled too, with the Toffees having gone six games across all competitions without a victory prior to seeing off the Eagles in Wednesday’s cup tie, which set up a home clash with Luton Town on 27 January.

But this moment from Gomes was a bit of respite for a fanbase that has been put through the winger in recent weeks, a brilliant effort worthy of settling another close-fought contest.

Godfrey was clear appreciative, while the likes of James Tarkowski and Joao Virginia also expressed their delight under Gomes’ post. Hopefully there can be a few more of these magic moments to come in the second half of the season.
