Fabrizio Romano drops update on Newcastle United pursuit of Everton star Amadou Onana amid FFP details
Fabrizio Romano says Newcastle United may not be able to pursue a move for Amadou Onana as the Everton midfielder is “very expensive”.
The transfer expert added via his Daily Briefing column on Sunday (21 January) that Newcastle are one of “multiple clubs” interested in Onana.
However, due to the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules, it is suggested super-rich Newcastle will be put off making a move this month, with a summer approach more likely.
Bargaining power
Everton are in no need to sell prized assets this month, even if their financial shortcomings have been well documented in recent times.
There is still serious uncertainty over 777 Partners’ takeover at Goodison Park, which could determine what happens in the summer in terms of player sales.
Onana would bring in a large sum for Everton, but he is needed more than ever right now in this fight against Premier League relegation.
Manchester United and Chelsea are among the other clubs to have been linked with Onana, who is under contract until June 2027.

That gives Everton plenty of bargaining power when it comes to agreeing a fee, but hopefully it does not come to that.
The hope instead is that new owners are in place by the summer and the club can focus on strengthening the squad rather than weakening it.
Ultimately, if a large enough bid comes in and the player asks to leave, then the Toffees will have a big call to make in the summer.
In other Everton news, a date has reportedly been set for the start of the appeal hearing against the 10-point Premier League deduction.
