777 Partners ready to bleed Genoa dry to save Everton as Fabrizio Romano details transfer talks

777 Partners could be ready to bleed Genoa dry in order to save Everton with Ben Godfrey now a target for the Serie A outfit this month.

Italian transfer guru Fabrizio Romano shared on his personal Twitter account (24 January) that the Italian outfit are considering a move to sign Godfrey in what could be a last-gasp January transfer.

The former Norwich City defender who’s become an outcast under Sean Dyche this season could be an option for Genoa given their 777 Parterns connection, with an expected takeover on Merseyside still needing Premier League and FA approval.

Discussions are already taking place between the two clubs with several more clubs interested in Godfrey’s services.

However, it seems as though 777 Partners could well be willing to bleed the Italians dry in order to save Everton’s skins given the financial jeopardy the Blues are currently faced with.

The American-based investment firm have been funding the Toffees even despite the takeover still not being given the approval and such money seems to be pouring in from the other clubs on 777’s portfolio.

The Times reported on 7 December that the American owners are not willing to continue financing the everyday running of Everton with monthly loans past the end of January having already put £100million into the club in what they see as a “show of good faith and commitment” ahead of taking over at Goodison Park.

And with that development, 777 Partners could well be looking at other avenues to help save Everton’s financial skins and that is sell one of their clubs a player who has barely featured all season.

Genoa could well be on the end of a bad deal should they sign the Englishman but also see their cash flow take a hit should they seal his signature and that’s the cost 777 Partners are willing to endure in order to help arguably one of the most prestigious clubs on their portfolio soon.

It has been clear for some time that Godfrey is now little more than a spare part at Everton. He has found regular football hard to come by under Sean Dyche and a move away this month would be ideal for all parties involved.

The 25-year-old has made only two appearances for Sean Dyche’s side this season, coming off the bench for one minute of Premier League action in September and playing the full 90 in their 2-0 win over Burnley (16 December).

The York-born powerhouse appeared to be a worthy capture at the time of his arrival back in 2020 signed by Carlo Ancelotti, having previously starred for his previous employers Norwich City, both in the second tier and in the Premier League.

Godfrey commanded a rather sizeable fee at £20m, after showing some tremendous potential and growth in his game during his early years at Carrow Road, especially in the Premier League.

Now, Godfrey is a player who could be sold for four times less than that above figure but every penny counts with the Toffees trying to get themselves in line with FFP spending rules, even if that means taking a considerable loss.

It’s best for all parties if Godfrey leaves the club now given his struggles with first-team action and it looks as if Genoa are considering falling into the trap of saving a player who is being used as a scapegoat by 777 Partners to save the Merseysiders.
