Everton transfer news emerges as Ben Godfrey and Mason Holgate update drops at Goodison Park

Sheffield United are keeping tabs on Everton defensive duo Ben Godfrey and Mason Holgate, as Napoli register an interest in Anel Ahmedhodzic, according to talkSPORT.

The radio station reported via its website [24 January] that the Blades are interested in both of the Goodison Park players with potential late moves on the cards.

It is understood that Holgate and Godfrey are open to sealing an exit before February 1, with a lack of playing time not helping either this season.

Just isn’t working

The downfalls of both players have been rather sad to watch unfold before our eyes. But with James Tarkowski and Jarrad Branthwaite virtually undroppable this season, there is little room for either defender at the club.

With Michael Keane the main backup to either side of the defensive partnership, a move away from Goodison Park seems the best idea for all involved parties.

Godfrey proved that he still has what it takes to be a Premier League defender, replacing Branthwaite for Everton’s 2-0 victory over Burnley in December and making a smart goalline clearance after a Tarkowski mistake.

However, Sean Dyche has not given him the chance to build on that performance, not playing a single minute of football since. And Holgate’s situation is equally as frustrating, with the 27-year-old only making six appearances for Southampton since August 2023.

It could be unlikely that both players depart to Bramall Lane, though. If Branthwaite is to be snapped up by a European giant this month, or in the summer, Godfrey may be given a chance before the club can bring in another defender.

But would Godfrey want to wait or will he want to take a chance with the Blades?
