Fabrizio Romano: Everton await stronger bids to sell Ben Godfrey as direct talks underway over Goodison Park exit
Everton are awaiting stronger bids to sell Ben Godfrey duringthe January transfer window despite entering direct talks with Genoa, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The Italian journalist reported via his X account on Wednesday (24 January) that the deal between the Toffees and the Italian giants is not easy to complete, despite talks being held between the two sides, who could soon bother be owned by 777 Partners.
Sean Dyche’s side believe that a better proposal could arrive from different clubs for the 26-year-old between now and the end of the window and could therefore wait for those offers to arrive.
Genoa may also opt to use their extra European spot to sign David Anyeke from Sheriff during the January window, instead of signing Godfey.
Writing on X, Romano said: “More on Ben Godfrey. Deal with Genoa not easy despite interest and direct talks as there are more clubs in the race. Everton believe there are better proposals incoming for Godfrey in the next days… …and Genoa could use extra-UE spot for David Anyeke from Sheriff.”
Not finished yet
It had seemed as though this would be fairly easy deal for all parties to complete this month, because of both clubs ties with 777 Partners, however that now appears to be far from the case.
Everton need Godfrey’s wages off of their books, so a move away sooner rather than later may be ideal in that respect, but they will also want to earn as big a transfer fee as possible so will hold out for a cut-price deal.
However, Genoa may opt to use their European spot in a different way before the end of the window, which would then end any chance of them being able to reignite their interest in Godfrey should no further offers arrive.
Everton have to tread this line very carefully in the coming days as they could regret turning down this interest, especially if no other proposals arrive. After all, the end of the window is drawing incredibly near.
