Kaveh Solhekol namedrops Everton in ‘very careful’ January transfer window verdict

Clubs are being “very careful” with transfers this month due to Everton being deducted points for breaching financial rules.

That is according to Sky Sports News chief reporter Kaveh Solhekol, discussing why the January window has been quieter than normal.

Both the Toffees and Nottingham Forest have been charged with breaching financial rules, with the former already deducted 10 points for that offence.

“The real reason is the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules,” said Solhekol, as per Sky Sports (24 January). “They have been around for a long time but in the past couple of months, we’ve seen the league being very serious about applying those rules.

“For instance, Everton were deducted 10 points for breaching the rules, while they and Nottingham Forest have been charged.

“So that has focused minds at a lot of clubs as the last thing they want to do is break those rules and potentially be deducted points. That is the main reason – people are being very careful.”

Fear

There is definite fear from Premier League clubs regarding the competition’s financial rules, with January usually a busy time for transfers.

The window at this time of the year is quiet compared to the summer window, but that is because the latter usually involves several high-profile deals.

There is, of course, still time this month for players to make big moves, but the fear of breaking the rules is definitely playing a major role.

Everton have been hit twice for that offence, followed closely by Nottingham Forest, with other Premier League clubs potentially not far behind.

Another reason behind the lull in January comes with managers being keen to keep hold of their core squad at this key stage of the season.

And that is undoubtedly how Toffees manager Sean Dyche will be feeling, with the boss not wanting any first-team players heading out of Goodison Park in the coming days.

In other Everton news, talks are underway over a loanee exit, and the deal could go down to the wire this month.
