Everton: Finance expert questions Caroline Dinenage intervention as answers demanded from Richard Masters

Football finance expert Martin Calladine has questioned Caroline Dinenage’s “feeble grandstanding” after she sent a personal letter to Richard Masters over referring to Everton as a “small club”.

The letter, as shared via the Culture, Media and Sport Committee’s Twitter account on Friday (26 January), was personally signed off by the committee’s chair Dinenage.

Gosport MP Dinenage asked Premier League chief executive Masters a number of questions on the back of the recent DCMS hearing, in which Everton’s Profit and Sustainability breaches were heavily mentioned.

However, in reply to the letter, Calladine – the author of ‘The Ugly Game’ and ‘Fit and Proper People’ – posted on Twitter [26 January]: “I’m all for giving Richard Masters a hard time, but asking him to set out in writing what is and isn’t a small club – while allowing him to skate on the claim the Premier League doesn’t engage in anti-Independent Regulator lobbying – seems like feeble grandstanding to me.”

Clarity

Masters made a number of strange comments at the recent hearing, but referring to Everton as a “small” club was the one that stood out the most.

Beyond that, Dinenage has also asked Scudamore to clarify the lack of transparency regarding the record 10-points deduction.

The CMSC also wants clarity for Everton supporters as to whether the latest PSR ruling will be finalised before the final weekend of the Premier League season.

These are questions – certainly in the case of the latter – that Everton fans could do with being answered. In fact, every Premier League club deserves to know exactly what they are fighting for come the end of the campaign.

Masters did not cover himself with glory at the hearing and it has now led to this situation developing. If the past six months are anything to go by, do not expect a prompt response.
