Medical within hours: Everton agree deal in principle for Mason Holgate loan exit

Sheffield United have agreed a deal in principle to sign Everton defender Mason Holgate on loan ahead of transfer window deadline, according to The Athletic.

The website reported [1 February] that the Toffees centre-back is set to have a medical at Bramall Lane within hours on Thursday amid a proposed move to the Premier League strugglers.

Holgate was on loan with Southampton this season but has had his season-long deal terminated and will be leaving Goodison Park once again.

Change of scenery

With the defender limited to just five Championship appearances for the Saints this season, this is an ideal move for all parties. It was a rough start to life at the coast, proving that match sharpness was definitely an issue with the defender.

However, as the season has continued, Holgate has still struggled to make an impact at his loan club, with Jan Bednarek and Taylor Harwood-Bellis much preferred in the backline.

Aged just 27, the England U21 international still has the potential to become a regular in a Premier League side. However, it has certainly not worked out for him under Russell Martin and the Blades could provide Holgate with a lifeline.

Everton

It is vital that he gets his career back on track at Sheffield United, considering Everton’s uncertain centre-back situation in the summer, with Jarrad Branthwaite being tracked by multiple European giants.

The Blades currently have the leakiest defence in the Premier League this season, shipping 54 goals in 22 matches. Holgate’s leadership ability and experience across 151 Everton appearances could come in handy for Chris Wilder, who will be eager to avoid relegation this season.
