Stuttgart in behind-the-scenes talks to sign Everton defender Mason Holgate as journalist arrives at training headquarters

Stuttgart are in behind-the-scenes talks to sign a brand new defender with Everton loanee Mason Holgate amongst their list of targets, according to Felix Arnold.

The BILD journalist shared on his personal X account after arriving at Stuttgart’s training headquarters (1 February) that the Bundesliga outfit are in discussions on whether to sign Holgate along with some other potential names on their list.

However, it is possible that Stuttgart end up not bringing anyone in before the window closes.

Holgate is currently on loan at Championship club Southampton but has made just seven appearances in all competitions for the Saints and has also been linked with Sheffield United.

Arnold posted: In addition to Holgate & Lilian Brassier, there are other names that will be discussed behind closed doors at Stuttgart. The search for a replacement for Dan-Axel Zagadou is in full swing.

“Problem: A transfer is difficult to realize in such a short time. It’s quite possible that no one will come anymore.”

Unlikely

Holgate has struggled during his time on loan at Southampton this season and his career is now very much at a crossroads.

A move to St Mary’s was supposed to have the opposite effect, but he has started just four Championship matches under Russell Martin.

The Everton defender is now stuck before the window shuts and it’s unlikely that a move to Stuttgart will be possible given their current struggles right now.

The 27-year-old could do with finding a club where he will play regularly, but whether Sheffield United is the right choice remains to be seen.

The Blades are eyeing up potential defensive targets but Holgate’s lack of minutes could force them to look elsewhere. Also, it remains to be seen whether the Toffees will be willing to strengthen a relegation rival.

Everton

It is clear Everton don’t really want him around on their books for nothing so a move must be sealed for him fairly quickly but the huge stumbling block is finding an interested suitor.
