Newcastle transfer news: Scouting update emerges on Everton midfielder Amadou Onana

Newcastle scouts made first-hand checks on Everton star Amadou Onana, Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay and Bournemouth ace Philip Billing in January.

According to the Athletic [2 February], the Saudi owned club was keen on securing a new central midfielder in January but were only willing to pay a loan fee.

At the end of the window, Onana stayed at Goodison Park while McTominay and Billing didn’t leave Manchester United and Bournemouth either.

Important bit of business

Retaining Onana was indeed a pivotal move for Everton, considering his importance to the squad and the interest from other top clubs.

Sean Dyche holds Onana in high regard, recognising his talent and potential contribution to the team.

Furthermore, the Belgium international’s skillset attracted attention from clubs like Manchester United, Arsenal and Newcastle, indicating his value in the transfer market.

The allure of potentially higher wages at clubs like United, Arsenal and Newcastle could have been tempting for Onana, given their financial resources.

These clubs have the financial capacity to offer lucrative contracts, potentially swaying players with attractive salary packages.

However, Everton’s ability to retain Onana despite this competition underscores their commitment to building a competitive squad and retaining key players.

Despite all the challenges behind the scenes, it’s a testament to Dyche that he kept his squad intact.

In other Everton news, the Toffees’ transfer deal to sign an in-form player in January would have included a £7m option to buy.
