Everton: Andy Burnham slams media coverage of Premier League points deduction

Andy Burnham says he “won’t forget how little coverage” has been given to Everton regarding their 10-point Premier League deduction.

Everton were hit with the sanction – a record in English top-flight history – three months ago, contributing to them now being in the relegation zone.

While the story dominated newspaper columns at the time, it has since died down – much to the chagrin of Greater Manchester Mayor Burnham.

“I won’t forget how little coverage there’s been about Everton’s points deduction,” he posted on his personal Twitter page [4 February].

“The biggest penalty in the history of top-flight English football – and the media accept it without question?

“It says something troubling about the conflicts of interest at the heart of our game.”

Everton points deduction appeal hearing latest

Much has been said and written about the points deduction, and there is no point in going over old ground.

Everton fans are right to feel wronged, even more so as a second potential PSR punishment could await in the coming weeks.

The club put its case forward this week as to why the 10-point deduction was unnecessary, with a verdict in that case also due soon.

The point Burnham is making is that the mainstream media are scared about calling out the Premier League due to their partnerships with the organisation.

Supporters deserve huge praise for refusing to let the matter go, and it is hoped that the screw has been turned enough for the deduction to be overturned – at least partly.

The next week or so for Everton is going to be massive in more ways than one, not even factoring the 777 Partners latest, and it will be interesting to see just how the cases are covered in the media.
