Premier League in ‘awkward’ position as Everton, Nottingham Forest PSR cases raised at meeting

The Premier League finds itself in an “awkward” position with regards to its updated Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), according to Kieran Maguire.

Widespread reports earlier this week suggested league chiefs are to overhaul the current PSR system on the back of Everton – twice – and Nottingham Forest being charged with breaching the rules.

Nothing official has yet to have been said by the Premier League, however, and football finance expert Maguire believes they should quickly release details of this week’s meeting between all 20 clubs.

“Part of the problem with these Premier League shareholder meetings is that there’s 20 chairmen or chief-executives attending the meetings,” he said on the Price of Football podcast [7 February, 16m 35s].

“You know some of them, I know some of them – they like to gossip. I think the Premier League is in an awkward position.

“It would make sense to release the minutes of the meeting as soon as possible, otherwise we get it going through two or three WhatsApp groups and then a newspaper as a story.”

Everton made an example of in PSR cases

The whole PSR debate was no doubt the hottest topic of discussion at this week’s meeting in London on the back of a very quiet January transfer window.

Clubs were clearly scared to spend as they have seen what happened with Everton in November when hit with a 10-point deduction, with another possibly to follow.

As things stand, clubs are limited to £105million of losses over a rolling three-year cycle. However, that is supposedly being looked at in time for the summer transfer window.

The Premier League had always supposedly planned to look into the current PSR regulations, but it is surely no coincidence they are doing so right now.

As Maguire says, they have found themselves in an “awkward” position. It does not help when various aspects of the meeting are leaked to the press, rather than just coming out through official channels.

If the system is changed so that other clubs can now spend more freely, it will only infuriate Everton fans more. The Premier League looked to make an example of the club, and all for what?
