Everton: Rio Ferdinand shares what Frank Lampard told him about Seamus Coleman, ‘ridiculous’

Rio Ferdinand shared what Frank Lampard told him about Everton stalwart Seamus Coleman, describing it as “ridiculous” they paid only £60,000 to sign him back in January 2009.

The Toffees paid the nominal fee to Sligo Rovers 15 years ago (official website) and Coleman has gone on to become a club legend and is considered as one of the best bargains in the history of the Premier League.

Former Manchester United defender Ferdinand was asked about Coleman when speaking as a pundit on TNT Sports prior to Everton’s clash with Manchester City on Saturday (10 February) and spoke about the praise for Everton boss Lampard had for the club captain.

“Ridiculous,” he replied when the £60,000 fee was brought up.

“What he’s given to that football club, I spoke to Frank Lampard and he said he’s a leader among men, salt of the earth type character.”

Is Everton ace Seamus Coleman the Premier League’s best-ever bargain?

Who ever would have thought that an unknown player costing £60,000 could have become such an important part of Everton’s modern-day history?

Well that is exactly what happened with Coleman, who has been an absolutely superb servant to the club over the past 15 years and is rightly revered by supporters, teammates, coaches, and pundits alike.

Last month, Coleman broke Everton’s all-time Premier League appearance record, which shows just an important player he has been to the club and shows the impressive longevity he has managed in the Premier League.

It might be quite a subjective argument but Coleman has to be in the conversation for the best Premier League bargain of all time. In terms of appearances, length of service, and quality of play, there are few who match the amiable full-back.

It speaks volumes about the man that he is held in such high regard by players who have played during the same era as him.
